Pregnancy and infant loss awareness is meant to help people understand the emotions and grief people go through when they experience a loss of this type. This understanding helps create a community to help support and love all people who have suffered from this loss. We believe miscarriage and pregnancy/infant loss is the same; a loss is a loss.
Too many families grieve in silence, sometimes never coming to terms with their loss. Our goal is to help others relate to our loss, know what to say, do or not say, not do and to help families live with their loss, not "get over" their loss.
An equivalent of approx. 2,000 pregnancies are lost a day in the United States.
Or approx. 700,000 pregnancies are lost every year in the United States.
HOW IT STARTED...
In 1988, President Ronald Reagan declared the month of October as pregnancy and infant loss awareness month. (You can read the entire proclamation here: http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=35064). In 2006, Robyn Bear and Lisa Brown enlisted the help of people from all 50 states to create a national day to help support families. This resulted in October 15th becoming the national day for pregnancy and infant awareness.
